IB Design Technology IA
Cycling Gel Storage + Retrieval
A top-tube system designed for one-handed gel retrieval, temporary waste storage, and configurable fueling reminders while riding.

What the work demonstrates.
This Design Technology IA begins with a problem from cycling: retrieving and opening an energy gel safely while riding, then storing the used package without dropping waste.
The concept combines a top-tube-mounted retention mechanism, a lower waste receptacle, and an electronic reminder system. Its value as a case study lies in the technical conflicts between usability, retention, packaging variation, weather, vibration, and safety.
Balance retention force with easy release across package sizes, bicycle geometries, vibration, weather, electronics, and rider safety.
Development record
Stages, iterations, and evidence.
- 01
Mechanical
Retention and retrieval
Develop clamp geometry that holds multiple gel packages securely while allowing deliberate one-handed removal.
- 02
Product
Mounting and waste storage
Fit the system to bicycle top-tube geometry and provide temporary storage for opened packaging.
- 03
Electronic
Reminder and control
Develop a compact PCB concept with an LED, buzzer, start/pause control, selectable gel count, and adjustable interval.
Active questions
What the next evidence needs to answer.
- 01What retention force prevents accidental release without making retrieval unsafe?
- 02How should the mount accommodate vibration, weather, and different top-tube geometries?
- 03How will prototype testing measure usability rather than rely on appearance?
